We are new to the site, but know a few of you on here. We're Main'ahs, but we are from down state. BIL got me back into sledding and now jr and I get out and enjoy ourselves
Jr races Karts in the summ'ah. He wrecks'em and I get to fix'em. As a rookie this year it was amazing how fast he progressed. It's really cool when he can tell you what the Kart is doing and you make a few tweaks and he knocks off another couple of tenths. Guess that's why they call it team work in NASCAR
We're pretty much an Arctic Cat family. We're not the fastest but we'll eventually show up at the next road crossing or trail junction.
We like to have fun and be safe.
Thank you to all the landowners who allow us to ride on their property because with out them we don't ride!:-D

Hey Jeff, I used to race Lites, and Mediums a few years back. We ran Shadow ZX-1 karts with the Briggs flathead. Super fun sport but some of the kids/parents think it IS Nascar already and take things to heart way to much.

We ran sealed Boxstock in 2007. Flat kart with rocker cage Briggs falthead with Alcohol fuel purple plate 315 lbs. Spec tires. CJs division good time on 1/5 mile asphalt oval 12.0 to 12.2. Radar gun says they are doing 40 to 42 mph. Plate racing is all about momentum and not lifting.
This year we are moving on to the briggs animal motor. It just came back from the builder today.
Just watching is a huge adrenaline rush especially if we have him hooked up and he's running them down:-D

Where did you run?
I've run mostly here in CT at the Pomfret Speedway and a little in Poughkeepsie New York. They were all still mainly flathead classes then but there were a few animals starting to show up. I think they'll all be phased to the animals soon. I've actually still got a Shadow ZX-1 and 2 motors all ready to go.

The animal is a different beast altogether. We're still debating whether to run a local silver plate division out go to the Jr animal gold plate. Motor was dyno'd with gold plate and looks pretty strong.
You are right the Flat heads are starting to disappear. The animal is actully cheaper as it requires less rebuilds.
Did you ever run the NEPS?
We ran Once last year at Londonderry. Big track, high banks, very fast and unfortunately closed in 2008. CJ loved the drafting at Londonderry

Everyone had said that the animals would need less rebuilds but i've got a feeling thats what everyone said about the flathead before people fudged the rules and pushed those to the max they could handle. Controlled valve float, shrinking rings, boring carbs, you know all the tricks. That'll happen to the Animal in a few years and you'll be rebuilding them every 3 races like the flatheads.
No, I never ran the NE Pavement Series. I always wanted to but my brother and I never really had the time to dedicate to it. We stuck mostly with Pomfret until the politics just got to much to take. Everyone wanted to be in charge there and it just seemed like a pissing match between a hand full of adults.
Some of the guys I used to race with and be friends with off the track raced at Londonderry and they also said it was an awesome track. Its shut down now? Never to reopen? Thats a shame.

Greetings Jeff! Want to check out a fun place - go to www.patsacres.com - in Canby Oregon. Started racing there when I was about 7 years old (back in '69!!). A really really fun track that was a breakin to running Porsche's at Portland International Raceway many years later. Welcome again!

Skip, Thanks and Cool. Man you are a long way from home and the left coast. Kart racing in Maine is pretty much an oval thing with the exception of Maine Indoor Karting where CJ got his start. Flat foot it and turn left and hope it sticks

Ovals are a great way to start! Used to go to Autzen Stadium (home of the fighting Ducks!) to race around the outside of the stadium on the asphalt. Till folks going in/out started to worry about getting clipped! Then they said feel free to ride in the large parking lot. Fine BUT the loose gravel & concrete bases for the light towers made for a bad mix (especially for younger drivers!). Next stop after that was the Kmart parking lot after hours - which believe it or not back then they were fine with! Times change. Am looking forward to getting my kids into the sport. Have an old 3 wheel golf cart with a Harley motor that we tool around with - 7 yr old daughter loves to drive it (with me in the passenger seat.....).

Wow, those are some odd karts. Sort of a cross between an open kart and a champ kart.

GearHD6,
CJ is on a 98 Twister Chassis. The cage "floats" on the chassis on vertical pins which allows the chassis to flex as if there was no fixed/welded cage like a champ Kart. Kids are belted in with 5 point racing harness and arm restraints just like midget cars. Pretty safe system. CJ rolled his kart onto it's side in a practice session and was totally protected.
Check out this flat kart wreck at Londonderry last fall in the Howler Ouch!

Wow, looks like he got through it pretty well. Gotta love the comments from the camerawoman. Haha.
That sounds like a pretty cool idea with the cage set up. Is that something they just seem to use around your area? I've yet to see that set up anywhere around here. I was looking at some Twister Chassis` back in the early 2000's but I stuck with the Shadow. I figured if I upgraded i'd go for a Phantom or another Shadow. My brother and I were pretty much the only one on Shadows at the track we raced so getting feedback from others was non existant.

GearHd6,
Amazing how much I learned last year trying to make him go faster. It's physics, math and keeping good notes. We got a lot of help early in the season since we were new to the track. However after his first win all the advice dried up!

Haha, Yeah I know how that is. The advice drying up that is. I had a couple guys helping me out that ran a different class and they got myself and my brother running up front right off the bat. We learned quite a bit ourselves and were able to keep ourselves running up front. The changing track conditions were the hardest for us to pick up on, we'd think we were dialed in until we got out there and realized we missed the set up. I picked up on refreshing the flatheads myself so I kept our 4 engines running in tip top shape. I slowly gathered all the right tools to do the engines and my engine builder was actually pretty willing to teach me a few pointers.
