Anyone interested in a ride sometime mid January starting in the Moosehead Lake area in Maine and going......... (insert ideas here)? I think it would be fun to get a group of guys and gals together for a couple day trips. Let me know what everyone thinks. Lets make it happen. Thanks, Jeff

Why are you picking the starting point of Moosehead area. Is that were you will be staying at?

How many miles do you plan or want to ride in that day? I am interested in this. It depends on which weekend it is.

Moosehead area seems fairly central to me. It seems you can go all directions from there, Jackman, Forks, Millioncket, Bingham. Im open for any discussion on it, just figured i'd throw that out there. Im flexable on the distance per day, I'd like to keep it somewhere that everyones comfortable with. For me if the riding is good i'll go 250+ miles so it really depends on conditions. As for the weekend, there again im flexable. Lets see what some others have to say.

We can start from moosehead. I was just asking. I figured it was because that was where you stayed at when you were up here seeing you are from Connecticut. If the snow is good I think a good place to start from is New Port. I have found that there are not a ton of sleds that start from there in the past and the riding is nice because you don't run into a ton of people unlike the Rangeley area. But we can always work something out as we get more snow and then come up with a place. It sounds like you ride like me. We can put on a good 200 plus mile day if the conditions are good. We have put on a more then that before but 200 is a good day.

How often do you comme up to Maine sledding during the winter?

Im all for trying to ride out of Newport seeing its closer to highway means less driving in the truck for me. Im always up for less driving in the truck and more on the sled. Riding out of Newport may end up being a little later in the season with snow amounts mounting up so slowly lately. For me 200 miles is a pretty comfortable day as long as its not all woods and super rough trails then 200 miles can take you a week to cover. I get up to Maine as often as possible, my work slows right down to just about nothing so I can basically leave whenever, mid-week, weekends, it doesnt really matter.

I'm game. Newport is good for me to. Good way for a few of us to meet each other as well. I personally am booked 2nd week of feb. Why don't we throw out a time, place and loop ride just to try to work it up and adjust it accordingly.btw 200 mile ride sounds like a decent pace for the day.

We could tentatively set a date for late January in hopes of having rideable snow by then. We would need to decide how long the outting will be, one day, weekend, mid-week?? Once thats figured out we can further our plans and set some dates. As I stated, im flexable time wise so the dates should be set by the guys with scheduling issuses.

I ususally ride from here(Greenville) to Millinocket. Ride the local trails and the mountain trails, stay at a motel then ride back the next day.

Newport is a great place to unload and is a very easy ride up to the moosehead area.

Has anyone put any thought into the duration of the trip? If we all stayed at that same motel or at least the same general area I dont see why we couldnt go for a group ride at least a couple days. If peoples schedules allow I think it would be best to ride the begining of the week rather than weekends but here again thats all up to what everyones work schedule will allow.

I am out if it is during the week. I can only ride weekends.

I figured I'd just throw it out there to see what people would think. I'll ride weekends, like i've said, im flexable thats why I was looking for input from others.

Here is one suggestion.

How about putting in at New Port on a Saturday morning at the parking area either at Sebasticook Lake on route 7 or just down the road where the ITS trail crosses route 7. From there we could head north up ITS 85 to Dover-Foxcroft. Then north on ITS 82 then we jump on ITS 83 north stopping in Medway for lunch. After lunch we jump back on ITS 83 and right after East Millinocket we jump on a side trail that takes us to ITS 86 to Abol Bridge where branches out and stops. Then back down ITS 86 south to Kokadjo and to Greenville where we get back on ITS 85 south again back to New Port.

I have done this trip before in one day. We were moving right along. I can not remember the mileage for this trip but I think it was about 208 or somewhere around that. I don’t know what everyone wants to set for a pace on this trip. This one may be to long and people may want a slower trip. Personally I like a trip where we can move right along. But I am not opposed to doing a slower paced trip either.

There are so many options or twists we can add to this if we wanted to. We could make it an overnighter somewhere and go further out or we could go in a different direction or even start somewhere else.

That doesnt sound bad to me. By my calculations thats going to be around 230 miles but I could be mistaken. Im not sure of the mileage from East Millinocket to Kokadjo though. Im guessing its got to be close to 60 miles.

Yes I think that was the ballpark figure.

Does anyone have any ideas for a decent motel I could stay at in the Newport area? Something reasonably priced would be good.

No I have no ideas about a motel. But are we ready to set a date for this yet. How about 04 Feb or 18 Feb?

OK. I wrote New Port on my calendar and I will also put it on the calendar here on the web site. Now the only thing we need to have is snow and set a meeting time and place.

Alright, i'll mark it down as well. I'll prolly just unload from a motel somewhere there. I'll have to locate a motel and then i'll keep you posted. We can either meet there or I can ride down trail to where you guys will be. We'll work it out.

Let me make sure I have this right. We are planning on doing the trip I posted in post #14 of this thread right? That is the trip from New Port to Abol Bridge and back.

Yeah that all sounds good to me. Like you said before, as long as they've got enough snow down there. Newport tends to be a little thinner snow cover wise when other areas have a ton of snow.

At this rate with the warm temps theres going to be no snow left anywhere in mid to southern Maine. Gotta love it! Is it November or the end of March?

Man, it is not looking good for the 04 Feb date we set for this trip. We better get a couple of good storms in before then.

Yeah, I say thats going to be pretty much scrapped at this point by the looks of it. Maybe a reschedule is in order once trails even get rideable.

I see not big storm in the future. I say we hold off until the beginning of next week and see what happens. I would even be willing to trailer somewhere to get a ride in together. But I am not going to trailer to the county.

Were getting 1 to 3 inches tomorrow so it is slowly accumulating again. Maybe we will get lucky and get something next week and we can still keep the scheduled ride. I am not holding my breath though.

Well it looks like this ride is not going to happen this weekend. This weather stinks to say it mildly. First we get a good dump of snow and then the temperatures go in the 40's and then it rains. I hope this is not going to happen all winter.

GearHd6
Feb 02, 2006, 05:32 PM
Yeah, I pretty much figured it wasnt going to happen either. I dont really want to ride dirt, mud, rocks or roots. We'll play it by ear from here on out I guess.

Any chance of this ride this coming season? Weather permitting obviously. Something to think about.

I am always up for a ride. I know snow was really scarce up there last year.

Sounds good to me. Once snow starts flying then we'll start laying down a plan.
