and unfortunatley passed away. SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — A central Michigan man died after an apparent heart attack while competing in the International 500 Snowmobile Race.
Joe Burch II, 44, fell from his sled Saturday down the backstretch of the one-mile oval track, The Evening News reported.
Burch, a veteran snowmobile racer, had been driving for 38 laps after replacing another driver. He collapsed and fell from his vehicle during lap 241 of the 500-lap endurance run, event chairwoman Jan Bailey said Sunday.
Emergency medical technicians at the scene were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at War Memorial Hospital.
John Burch told the Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant that his brother apparently had a heart attack.
Joe Burch was from Rosebush, about 125 miles northwest of Detroit.
Corey Davidson of Holt, Minn., won the I-500 in just under eight hours. About 30 drivers started the race.
Thoughts and prayers are with the family...
