should i take out the reed valves to clean them if possible? i have never taken out a reed cage so I'm skeptical about the seal and was wondering about the notorious boot failure and where to look for a possible problem?;

If you are talking boot failure you're probably talking a REV chassis sled. No? Belt dust in carbs or intake (sdi) is from the dust getting into the air intake system (duh). SLP makes a fabric used to screen the intake from snow dust. If you go to SLPs website and get some of that fabric you can glue the fabric over the holes in the intake system where the belt dust gets in and greatly reduce the dust issue. The left door of the sled has a plastic housing the connects with the airbox when the door is closed. Take the housing off the door and look at it. There are several holes in it. They are there so air can get in even if the intake is snow blocked. Using silicone glue, glue a square of the snow screen material over the holes and you have prevented belt dust from entering the intake system.

In addition to covering the holes on the backside of the side airbox... get a piece of prefilter big enough to cover the foam inlet of that box as well... then the inlet will never get clogged with snow either... you can ride in 6 feet of baseless powder all day & the snow will slide right off.

Why is this a common problem? Or is it a "should do irregardless issue"? ---Thanks

Not a huge deal really for most people... unless you tend to chew up a lot of belts on a regular basis... & the little bits of belt dust in the carb inlets bugs some people.

Of course, once you filter the holes in the backside of the airbox you'll likely still end up with some belt dust in the carbs as there's probably already quite a bit in the airbox that's yet to come out.
