interesting pit crew... what exactly is their job?? LMAO.

I was wondering when someone was going to ask..... :pimp:

FYI; The oldest rider rode the oldest sled... He was 83 and his sled was 68 something or another, I'm suppose to have a pic sometime this week or next. The engine is in the rear with a seat just in front of it.

Our local news paper [url=http://www.news-miner.com:55575]:puke: Daily News Musher[/url:55575] isn't what one would consider an Equal reporting publication.

The Tired Iron had some local dignataries, like the Governor of the Alaska and it took his office calling the paper to get them to actually write an article up and they still don't have it online, so I'll read it tonight and post some more info you.

This from WebCenter 11. At least someone was willing to write up on the Tired Iron without having to be asked why one of the largest events in Fairbanks doesn't get local news coverage..... http://www.webcenter11.com/

(03/13/06) The Chena River was the place to be Saturday whether you were riding or there to enjoy the bright sunshine and brisk temperatures.

It could only be Fairbanks' first Tired Iron, a vintage snowmachine river rally.

Newscenter 11's Billie Sundgren was there:

They came to ride and they came to enjoy the day with friends and true to the goal of the tired iron, they came to have fun.

"Wow. We knew it was gonna be huge. We didn't have any idea it was going to be as big as it was. There was thousands of people on the river and everybody had a smile on their face,” said Craig Compeau, race organizer.

One person smiling included my driver and volunteer for the day, and another person out enjoying the day was 76-year-old Jack Mease. He was one of 2 dozen racers who took part in the Jurassic Classic, a four lap race between Pikes and the Pump House. And yes, Jack finished the race.

"Well, my weekend event, I have to admit I ran out of steam on Saturday and I went home and took a nap so I could out dancing at The Spur,” said Jack Mease, Jurassic Classic.

Hey, he finished didn’t he?

"82-year old Charlie Broker made six laps and he was on his way to a 7th but they had to stop him and when we asked him why after the race, he said, 'Hey, I was just warming up,” added Compeau.

The main event was the tired iron; four laps between the Pump House and the mouth of the Tanana River. 90 racers took part in the race. Race? What race?

Compeau explained, "We had about a 50 percent finish ratio. Some couldn't get passed the starting line. But most did and even those that got towed back, Billie, they had thumbs up and were smiling. They were just glad to be a part of it."

Meanwhile, jack said he was glad to be a part of it too and he's already looking forward to the 2007 edition of the Tired Iron.

"I don't want to sound as though I wasn't happy, but I'm very displeased that we didn't have any Huskies in the race, not dog Huskies, but snowmachine Huskies and my grandson and I are going to do something about that,” added Mease.

Many of the old Tired Irons have new life in them now, thanks to the crews who spent weeks getting them ready for the race. And I wouldn't be surprised to see new sleds out there sharing the area trails with snowmachines from yester year.
