Who in here is a Trailmaster or just a simple trailworker?

I do a lot of brushing and signing each year. Has anyone ever used a grease pencil vs a sharpie marker to write on signs? Does the grease pencil stand up better to the elements than the sharpie?

Just a simple trailworker . . . I've only done the Sharpie thing. I did learn with our GPS maps that using the thicker mill laminate is worth the expense since it holds up better and you can get more life out of the old maps.

I hate going through the trails and seeing a sign I put up the yeat before and you cant read the damn thing anymore because its either FADED away or been washed away. That is why I wonder about using a grease pencil instead of a sharpie.

Ass. trail master, just used a sharpie in the past. Always carry one in my jacket all year while grooming to touch up the signs.

I have seen something called a paint pen, has anyone ever used one of these before?

I've used one . . . but I never thought to try it out on a trail sign. I'm not sure if it would be an improvement or not.

I wonder how the temps would affect the tape? It might be worth experimenting with this idea. Thanks.

Have you ever tried spraying them with one of those clear type spray paints after you marked them?

I am thinking it is the sunlight that is making them fade. If this is the case then putting a coating over then may not help. This is just my opinion though. You know what they say about opinions.

This what we use, and where we get them:

http://www.durablesupply.com/broadpointpx30.html

We use the wide PX-30's for most everything... I do use the fine point PX-21's on signs that I have to write a ton of directions on.

The paint marker writing seems to last for years. I've found signs that people have forgotten to take in for years and they are still quite readable. Permanent Marker on the other hand won't even last the season if the sun hits it at all... I got tired of re-writing signs constantly... now we spend around $35 every other year for a handful of them... worth every penny. The Dept of Conservation has been handing one out to each club the past two years that I've gone to the fall Trails workshop in Presque Isle. They must have finally got the message.
