2010 Fishing Thread

Finally got out on the hard water. Slow day for fish for me but a great day overall. Good food and drink. My Saltwater Fishing Club put together a just for fun tourny. Breakfast was eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and some Blackberry Brandy served very hot.

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

I definitely live too far south! Great pictures Casey, Presidents day weekend on Etna Pond for sure, all my traps are at Rob's house along with the sleds. It's one of the few times Maine Wardens don't ask for a license!

Who knows why the smallmouths don't bite under hard water? We catch tons of largemouths and perch but no smallies.

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

So, give me some feedback on these pics. Played around with some of my weekend catch pictures. I think they came out pretty cool, some are similar but was trying to get different colors, shapes etc. Something to pursue or throw out? When the black screen viewer shows up, double click on the picture and it will open in normal size.

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

Casey, I like the first and third photos in the first set. The detail of the pigmentation and colorations is great. No wonder they can hide in the grass so well.

Now if you could only read it's itty bitty mind and know what exactly it's thinking! Although it's probably waiting for someone to get careless and get a finger a little too close! LOL!

Those are pretty cool Casey, I like the perch coming out of the hole too. If you look close you can see the shoreline in the fishes eye.

I noticed the shoreline also, when I first started cropping. Got a rainbow today but camera was too far away to get a closeup, brother might have gotten a pic of me but not sure.

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

Ty got a microscope for christmas and has been begging to use it. I had also promised him that we would go to the stream and collect some larvae. We got a bunch of Caddis, Stonefly, and not sure about the other ones. On the microscope pics you can see the head of the Caddis in the first one and the last one is of the abdomben.

Casey, you're bring back alot of memories! Reminds me of the two oldest boys and myself kicking around in the Maine bush looking for brookies back in the 70's! Darn my boys are getting old!

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

Got an email from Wes last night... Open water fishing season in Maine is now open under an emergency law.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 25, 2010

Open Water Fishing Season Now Open

AUGUSTA – Open water fishing season is now open under an emergency law signed by Gov. John E. Baldacci today, Thursday, March 25, 2010.

All lakes, ponds and brooks are open except those with specific opening-day regulations that start after April 1 as listed in the 2008-2009 Open Water Fishing Law Book.

Bag and size limit rules contained in the 2008-2009 Open Water Fishing Law Book also apply.

The emergency law is in effect from March 25 to April 1, 2010.
A new fishing law book that combines ice fishing and open water fishing rules, including several new regulations, will become effective on April 1, 2010. Distribution of this law book began a couple of weeks ago and is available where fishing licenses are sold.

“People have been anxious to drop their lines given that ice fishing season ended too soon in some parts of the state, with many lakes and ponds experiencing early ice out conditions,” Commissioner Roland “Danny” Martin said. “We’re happy to provide this opportunity to anglers, and remind them to be mindful of early spring cold-water conditions by being safe.”

Open water fishing season historically begins on April 1 on most waters of the state. Because of unseasonably warm weather opening up waterways in many counties and strong public interest in wanting to fish, Maine Sen. Bruce Bryant, D-Oxford County, sponsored emergency legislation to start the season early.

“Let’s go fishing!” exclaimed Sen. Bryant, upon the Governor’s signature of the bill.

Re: 2010 Fishing Thread

My wife used to take Scooter, my 23 year old, almost everyday after school when he was younger to a small stocked stream near the house. He always had worms in the fridge ready to go. He also had a worm farm in the basement, that lasted until he forgot to put the top back on and there were worms from one end of the basement to the other. We chased worms for two days down there. The wife was not happy about that at all!

She not only hunts but fishes as well, she can be pretty competitive in the bass boat and has actually won the pool for the largest smallie each year a few times.
